Telematics in transition

Preparation for the 2G shutdown by 2028

The mobile communications landscape in Germany is facing significant change: Deutsche Telekom plans to shut down its 2G network on June 30, 2028, while Vodafone plans a gradual shutdown by the end of 2030. Telefónica has not yet announced a specific date.

Impact on telematics systems

Many telematics applications currently use the 2G network for data transmission. These include GPS tracking, fleet management, and remote monitoring of technical systems. With the shutdown of 2G, devices based exclusively on this technology will no longer be functional.

Need for action for companies

Companies should review their existing telematics systems early on and switch to compatible technologies such as 4G or 5G. tepcon GmbH responded early to this development and has been offering exclusively traisy hardware with LTE modules for real-time tracking since the beginning of 2024.

our recommendation

Carry out an inventory: Identify all telematics devices and systems currently using 2G.

Plan a technology upgrade: Evaluate the options for migrating to 4G or 5G-capable hardware and plan the replacement in good time before mid-2028.

It is advisable not to wait until the final shutdown, but to act proactively to ensure a smooth transition and avoid possible business disruptions.
